What the work involves

Cracks get cleaned out and filled with hot rubberized sealant that stays flexible through the freeze and thaw cycles. It is the highest-value pavement work at this elevation, because it stops water before water becomes ice inside your pavement.

Why it matters at this elevation

Crack sealing is the cheapest insurance in mountain pavement maintenance. The damage that finishes pavement off happens in the base, under the asphalt, and the base gets wet through cracks. Closing them with flexible hot rubber keeps the water out through a season of freezing and thawing.

At roughly 4,950 feet, this is some of the lowest ground we work — a longer season, an earlier start, and a lighter snow load than the higher communities. Pavement here dries out earlier in the spring than the ridge communities do, which usually means the working season opens a few weeks sooner. That does not make it mild. It still cycles through freezing and thawing constantly on both shoulders of winter, and that cycling is what opens cracks.

How the job runs

The kettle work looks simple and the preparation is where the job is won. A crack full of pine needles, old failed filler, or moisture will not hold a bond no matter how good the rubber is. Clean and dry first, then hot material, then let it set.

Sierraville pavement specifically

Ranch and residential drives, shared access roads, and small commercial pavement. Work this far out is best grouped with other jobs on the same run, which is worth raising when you call.

Down on the valley floor at around 4,950 feet the pavement lives an easier life than the lake communities do. Sierraville sits north of Truckee in Sierra Valley, up Highway 89 over Sierra Summit, a small ranching community on the floor of one of the largest alpine valleys in the country.

The crack pass is the piece that has to happen before winter. Everything else on a property can wait a season. Open cracks going into the snow cannot.
